Matt Darriau

Mathieu Jean "Matt" Darriau (born February 21, 1960 in Colorado Springs ) is an American modern jazz and world musician . In addition to the alto saxophone and clarinet , he also plays the shepherd's flute Kaval and the bagpipe Gajda .

Live and act

Darriau grew up as the son of the sculptor Jean Paul Darriau in Bloomington (Indiana) and was influenced early by the jazz program of David Baker ( Indiana University ). He studied at the New England Conservatory with George Russell and Joe Maneri . With George Schuller he founded the large formation Orange Then Blue , which cultivates the repertoire of Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk and the Third Stream compositions by Gunther Schuller and has performed with musicians such as George Adams and John LaPorta . He also founded Les Misérables Brass Band in Boston , with which he plays a polystylistic ethnic jazz , and Smash the Window .

Darriau has been working in New York City since 1990 . His Paradox Trio , which has existed since the mid-1990s , includes guitarist Brad Shepik and cellist Rufus Cappadocia, drummer Seido Salifoski, who comes from Macedonia and is therefore very familiar with Roma and Balkan traditions. He has been to Europe several times with the Paradox Trio . With his band Ballin 'the Jack he dedicates himself to the jazz of the swing era. He is best known as a member of the Klezmatics , with whom he tours Europe regularly and received a Grammy in 2007 . But he is also interested in Celtic music (with the groups Whirligig and Smash the Window ). He also works with the Roberto Rodriguez Septet ( Tzadik ), with Frank Londons Klezmer Brass Allstars (Piranah), with the recently created Yusef Lateef Project and the Recycled Waltz Orchestra . He has also performed with Oliver Lake , Charlie Haden , David Byrne , Sanda Weigl and Marc Ribot .

Darriau has received various awards and commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America . With Off the Map he composed a work for jazz orchestras and musicians of the Andean, Balkan and Klezmer traditions.
