Shin A-lam (born September 23, 1986 in Geumsan , Chungcheongnam-do Province , according to other sources in Gunsan , Jeollabuk-do Province , or in Seoul ) is a South Korean sword fencer .
Shin, which began during her school years with the fencing, in 2012 won the Asian Championships in epee .
At the Summer Olympics in the same year, she reached the semi-finals in the individual competition. There there was a scandal in the battle against Britta Heidemann after the German scored the decisive goal in the last second of extra time. Previously, the clock had already been reset to a full second twice after double hits in the last second. The protest of the South Korean delegation was rejected after about an hour of discussion, and Heidemann made it to the final. According to the rules, Shin was not allowed to leave the railway during the examination of the protest because she would have accepted a defeat, but had to wait for the decision there. She finally left the scene after 72 minutes in tears and was accompanied by applause from the audience. Shin lost the subsequent battle for the bronze medal against the Chinese Sun Yujie and finished fourth. She refused the offer of the international fencing federation to award a special medal.
In team epee fencing , she won the silver medal with the South Korean team. In the final they were jointly defeated by the Chinese team.
In 2013, at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Shin A-lam won gold in the epee singles, at the World Championships in Budapest she came sixth in the epee singles.
