Olympic Summer Games 2012 / Badminton (Qualification)
In order to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympics in badminton , the athletes had to pass an almost one-year qualification .
Qualification criteria
172 athletes took part in the competitions, divided equally between 86 women and men. In the doubles, 16 pairs took part and in the singles, at least 38 individual starters were assumed. Due to the targeted equal number of female and male starters for all disciplines in total and the assigned wildcards, the number of participants increased to 46 in the women's singles and 40 in the men's singles. Each NOK was allowed to start a maximum of three athletes in singles and two doubles pairings per competition bring.
Decisive for the qualification was the world rankings of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in the individual disciplines as of May 3, 2012. In the individual, a NOK could place three athletes if all three were in first to fourth place in the world rankings, two athletes if both were listed up to 16th place and one athlete, if he was ranked 17th or worse, until all quota places were allocated. In doubles, a NOK could make two pairings if both were in first to eighth place in the world rankings and one pairing if it was ninth or worse until the 16 starting positions were filled.
In all disciplines, at least one athlete from each continental federation should take part in the competitions, whereby a NOK was only allowed to benefit from this rule twice. In the singles, the best placed athlete in a continental federation was given a quota place if no athlete could qualify through the regular qualification. The same procedure was applied in the doubles, but the pairing had to take at least 50th place in the world rankings for a starting place to be awarded.
The host NOK was guaranteed two starting places. The BWF and the Tripartite Commission were able to freely decide on quota places for three players and assign them by invitation.
Reserve list
In the event that a qualified athlete is not nominated by the NOK or other reasons such as injury are not taken into account, the starting field in the ranking of the next-placed athletes according to the qualification ranking is filled. As First the affected Eric Pang of the Netherlands, had the criteria of its NOK among the top 16 of the world must be the qualification ranking but far missed this goal with space 40th Scott Evans from Ireland was the successor . The New Zealand NOK also called for at least a chance of 16th place at the Olympics, so Michelle Chan and James Eunson were not nominated. Successors were Kerry-Lee Harrington and Petr Koukal . The Czech Koukal benefited from the regulation that the Australian federation was not allowed to use a continental starting place three times. Switzerland and Austria nominated Sabrina Jaquet and Simone Prutsch instead of the better placed Jeanine Cicognini and Claudia Mayer in the women's singles. Indonesia nominated Adriyanti Firdasari instead of Maria Febe Kusumastuti in the women's singles . For Anne Hald from Greece moved Sara Blengsli Kværnø to Norway. Shortly before the registration deadline, China nominated Li Xuerui in the women's singles instead of Wang Shixian, who was one place in front of her . Successor Kerry-Lee Harrington had to vacate her place for Thilini Jayasinghe from Sri Lanka shortly before the end of registration . After the final registration deadline on July 9th, no further changes could be made, so that failures could only have been compensated within the framework of the IOC Late Replacement Policy until July 20th, which was not the case.
Qualified athletes
In total, athletes from 51 different NOKs were able to qualify. Eight athletes and two athletes qualified in two different competitions, so that the number of individual starting places increased to 46 for women and 40 for men, which led to the required equal number of male and female starters including the wildcards to be awarded . These wild cards were both given in the men's singles to Virgil Soeroredjo from Suriname (BWF 221) and Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed from the Maldives (BWF 226).
