Carolina María Marín Martín (born June 15, 1993 in Huelva , Spain ) is a Spanish Olympic champion and multiple world and European champion in women's badminton . At the age of 21 she was already one of the most successful and best European badminton players in history.

Career

In her youth she won the silver medal in the women's singles at the European Youth Championships of the U19s in Milan in 2009 . At the subsequent European Youth Championships of the U17 in Medvode , she was able to win gold. She also won gold at the 2011 U19 European Youth Championships in Vantaa . At the 2011 World Youth Championships in Taipei , she won the bronze medal. At the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games , she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Starting as a youth player with the adults, she fought further tournament victories at the Irish International 2009 , the Uganda International 2010 , the Cyprus International 2010 , the Morocco International 2011 and the Spanish Open 2011 .

In her home country Spain, since 2009, she has won the Spanish championship six times in a row in women’s singles and twice in women’s doubles.

In the 2015 season of the BWF Super Series , she won next to the All England nor the Malaysia Open , the Australian Open , the French Open and Hong Kong Open .

On June 11, 2015, Marín reached number one in the world rankings for the first time and has led it for more than 58 weeks since then.

Marín's greatest successes are winning the 2016 Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro , the 2014 World Cup in Copenhagen , 2015 in Jakarta and 2018 in Nanjing in women's singles. In the 2014 World Championship final in Copenhagen, she beat the reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui with 17:21, 21:17, 21:18. In the final of Jakarta 2015 she won over Saina Nehwal with 21:16, 21:19. With a final win against Saina Nehwal, she also won the All England in 2015 with 16:21, 21:14, 21: 7. In 2014 she was European champion in Kazan , Tatar ; in the final she defeated Anna Thea Madsen with 21: 9, 14:21, 21: 8. This makes Marín the first of all Spanish badminton players to win a medal at World and European Championships . She is only the third and, at the age of 21, the youngest European world champion in women's singles since the introduction of the world championships in 1977. She is also the first player to win this title three times.
