The women's individual badminton competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 11th to 19th, 2016 in "Pavilion 4" of the Riocentro . 40 athletes took part.

13 players were seeded, which were divided into 13 groups. In the groups everyone played against everyone, the group winner qualified for the next round, which was played in the knockout system , in which the winners reached the next round. Due to an injury, the Chinese Li Xuerui could not compete in the game for 3rd place and thus lost automatically.

Due to a knee injury from the semi-final game, the Chinese Li Xuerui could not compete in the bronze medal, so the medal went to Nozomi Okuhara from Japan .
