Charles Rivett-Carnac was in 1908 in London at the Olympic Games in the 7-meter class Olympic champion . Since the Heroine , owned and skippered by Rivett-Carnac, was the only boat to take part in the competition after the withdrawal of the only competing boat, it was enough for her to cross the finish line in two races to achieve overall victory. The Heroine crew also included Norman Bingley , Richard Dixon and Rivett-Carnac's wife, Frances Rivett-Carnac . The Rivett-Carnacs were the first couple to win the gold medal together.

Rivett-Carnac's family lived in India , where he returned after finishing school in England and began working for the Indian Civil Service . He left this in 1897 and was appointed Accountant General in Burma . A year later he was financial advisor to the Siamese government for seven years and returned to England in 1905 as their representative. In the same year his first wife died and later he married Frances Rivett-Carnac. His great-granddaughter Cleone Rivett-Carnac won international medals as a track and field athlete.
