John Mackenzie (born September 21, 1876 in Greenock , † December 9, 1949 ) was a British sailor from Scotland .

John Mackenzie, the member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club and many leading sailing clubs of Scotland was, was in 1908 in London at the Olympic Games in the 12-meter class Olympic champion . In the regatta held on the Firth of Clyde in Scotland , only the two British boats Hera and Mouchette competed against each other in two races. The Hera , to whose crew Mackenzie belonged, won both races, so that in addition to Mackenzie and skipper Thomas Glen-Coats the other crew members John Aspin , James Bunten , David Dunlop , Arthur Downes , John Downes , John Buchanan , Albert Martin and Gerald Tait die Gold medal received.

During his 50-year sailing career, he won around 250 awards, most of them with his 18-foot yacht Florence . In 1891, John Mackenzie was appointed the Official Yacht Surveyor in the Clyde Region to assess and set yacht handicaps based on boat size and other factors.
