The Schwarzsee is a mountain lake at 1840 m above sea level on the Turracher Höhe on the border between Carinthia and Styria . The lake is 2.6 hectares and four meters deep. The Schwarzsee owes its name to its surface, which appears dark due to the moorland and anthracite deposits . The lake, which is surrounded by larger moor areas, flows - partly underground - in the Hinteren Seebach to the north. As a relic of the pre-ice age, the rare dwarf birch (Betula nana) grows on its banks .
A landscape protection area was established around the lake (LGBl. No. 77/1970, LSG.025 ) with 57.1 hectares, so that it can develop naturally and without burdensome bank development. It borders the biosphere reserve.
