Way in the Aschrottpark

The Aschrottpark is a Kassel Volksgarten .

history

The Aschrottpark is located on a steep limestone spur . In the 18th century the place was known locally as Sandküppel , then as Tannenkuppe and later Kalkofen-Berg . Until the middle of the 19th century there was a lime kiln on the Tannenkuppe , in which stone was burned on site . In the 1880s Sigmund Aschrott bought the site and had the site landscaped by the garden architects brothers Heinrich Siesmayer and Karl Friedrich von Siesmayer as part of an urban development plan in 1885 into a public landscape park. The completion took place between 1890 and 1896. With the design of the landscape park, a central, oval lawn parterre with ornamental shrubs and groups of trees, curved paths, a roundabout and a viewpoint to the Habichtswald were created . The Aschrottpark formed the western end of the Hohenzollernstrasse. Around 1900 a tennis court was built in the northeastern area. In 1901 the Aschrottpark was surrounded by a cycling track. During the Second World War, air raid tunnels were built, which were later backfilled. In 1957 the city of Kassel bought the Aschrottpark. According to the design of the city garden director Albrecht von Eichel-Streiber , the park was restored from 1960 to 1962 according to Aschrott's plans.
