Fabian Barbiero (born May 2, 1984 in Adelaide ) is an Australian football player of Italian descent. The midfielder is under contract with A-League club Adelaide United .
Career
After several stations in the South Australian Premier League , the top division of the state of South Australia , Barbiero came in the 2007/08 season to several short-term contracts with Adelaide United as a replacement for injured players. For the following season he received a one-year contract with Adelaide and developed into a regular player in central midfield. He reached the final of the AFC Champions League 2008 with Adelaide , but was not used in the two final defeats against Gamba Osaka . By reaching the finals in the continental competition, Adelaide qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2008 , in which Barbiero was in the starting line-up in two games.
In the Preliminary Final of the A-League season 2008/09 Barbiero scored against Queensland Roar from long range the 1-0 winner and secured his team the final. It was Adelaide's only goal in the play-off phase, in the final they lost to Melbourne Victory 0-1.
For the qualifying game on March 5, 2009 against Kuwait as part of the Asian Cup 2011 , national coach Pim Verbeek Barbiero nominated for the first time in the Australian national team . In the 1-0 defeat, he was used as a substitute.
