Diego Walsh (born December 8, 1979 in Santos ) is a Brazilian football player who also has US citizenship. The midfielder has been under contract with Wellington Phoenix in the A-League since 2009 .

Career

Walsh played in the United States at Southern Methodist University for four years and was elected to the NSCAA All-America first team (College All-Star Team) in 2001 and 2002 . In the 2003 MLS SuperDraft , Columbus Crew voted him seventh in the first round. Walsh was hardly able to play at Columbus behind Kyle Martino . For the 2004 season he was given to the Kansas City Wizards , where he temporarily moved into the starting line-up for the injured Preki . After his recovery, he mostly sat on the bench again and was released from the club after the 2005 season, in which he only played in one league. After a short stay at Real Salt Lake , he moved to the USL First Division for Miami FC , which among other things had the former world star Romário under contract.

During an international tour with Miami to Australia, he caught the attention of those responsible at Adelaide United , who signed him after a few days of trial. Diego Walsh established himself in Adelaide's central midfield and was one of the key players in reaching the final of the 2008 AFC Champions League . In the A-League they reached the championship final in the 2008/09 season, but lost to Melbourne Victory 0-1. A few weeks before the final, the club announced that they would not renew the contract with Diego Walsh. The reason for this move was cited as Walsh's vulnerability to injury, which put him out of action for almost half of the past two seasons. League rivals Wellington Phoenix signed the Brazilian only a short time later.
