Career

NSL

Alagich began his career in the early 1990s at Port Adelaide in the South Australian Division Two, the second highest division in the state of South Australia . In 1993 he moved to the Adelaide Sharks , who played in the national top division, the National Soccer League , after he had been awarded the Bob Telfer Medal as the best player in the league . In his six seasons with the Sharks, the club reached the championship playoffs only once, but where they failed in the first round at Sydney United. After the 1998/99 season, the team was disbanded due to financial problems and Alagich moved to the reigning champions South Melbourne FC . The club finished the 1999/2000 season in a disappointing 10th place, but the club won the Oceania Club Championship in 1999 and qualified for the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup . There they stayed against Manchester United , Vasco da Gama and Necaxa without winning a point and were consequently eliminated in the preliminary round. Alagich was used against Nexaxa. In the following season, the defender was substituted on only twice, while South Melbourne reached the Grand Final, but lost to Wollongong.

For the 2001/02 season he moved to league rivals Brisbane Strikers and played there for two years. After Adelaide City withdrew from the NSL, Adelaide United was a newly formed club, which gave Alagich the chance to return to his hometown. With Adelaide United he reached the Preliminary Final in the last edition of the NSL, where they lost 5-0 to Perth Glory. Previously, Alagich scored the 2-1 winner in the minor semifinal against South Melbourne in the 105th minute with a penalty.

A-League

After hiring the NSL, he kept fit with the Adelaide Raiders and was awarded the Sergio Melta Medal in 2004 as the best player in the South Australian Premier League . With the establishment of a new national league, the professional league A-League , he returned to Adelaide United in 2005. On the 3rd match day of the 2005/06 season Alagich was the first player in the history of the A-League to be sent off. Adelaide became champions of the regular season, in the playoffs they failed in the preliminary final. A year later they even reached the Grand Final, but were outclassed by Melbourne Victory 6-0.

He played his last competitive game in the professional field in the last group game of the AFC Champions League in 2008 . A 0-0 draw at the Chinese club Changchun Yatai FC was the first time an Australian team qualified for the quarter-finals of the most important Asian club competition. He then let his amateur career end as team captain of the Adelaide Raiders in the South Australian Premier League . In 2009 he received the Sergio Melta Medal again .

Selection teams

Alagich took part in 1992 as a successor with the Australian national school team on a tour to Great Britain and Ireland.

Later he was also appointed to the U-20 and U-23 selection of the Australian Football Association. For the U-23s, the defender completed four games in the successful qualification for the 1996 Summer Olympics , but was not called into the tournament line-up for the finals.
