The Thailand Provincial League , also known as the Pro League , was a football league in Thailand . It was carried out by the Thai Sports Association, or SAT for short ("Sports Administration of Thailand"). The league was partially in competition with the league of the Thai Football Association (" Football Association of Thailand ", short: FAT). The Pro League was held for the last time in 2008 and finally merged with the FAT leagues in 2009.

history

The Pro League was founded in 1999 by the Thai Sports Association. The Thailand Premier League , organized by the Thai Football Association, had existed since 1996 , but it mostly consisted of clubs from the greater Bangkok area . The participating clubs were mostly military , private companies or municipal institutions. Provincial associations were also not supported financially by the government. For these reasons, and in order to offer the provincial clubs a competitive platform, the SAT decided to found the Pro League. Since the league was founded, there have been repeated efforts to unite the two leagues in some way. In the Pro League there was only one champion who had neither the right to take part in competitions of the Asian Football Confederation , nor the opportunity to advance to the Premier League. This only changed in 2005. FC Chonburi and FC Suphanburi were the first two clubs in the Pro League to be promoted to the Premier League as finalists in the 2005 Pro League. A year later, the next club in the Premier League followed with FC Nakhon Pathom . After the end of the 2008 season, the Pro League went completely into the leagues of the FAT and was dissolved. In the Regional League , the 3rd league of Thailand, almost all Pro League clubs went on.

The best-known representative of the Pro League today is Chonburi FC . He is now one of the most successful and popular clubs in Thailand and was Thai champion in 2007.
