Laasqorey ( Somali : Laasqoray , Arabic لاسقُرَى, DMG Lāsqoray ), also Lasqoray , Las Qorei , Las Khorey , Las Khoreh or Las Koreh written is a port city and a district in the region Sanaag in northern Somalia with about 8400 inhabitants, mainly from the communities of Wars Angeli, a sub-clan of Harti- Darod .

The area is claimed by both the de facto independent Somaliland and the de facto autonomous state of Puntland .

geography

Laasqorey is located on the Gulf of Aden on the Maakhir coast . Not far away to the south is the Al Mado mountain range . The Geeldora Road leads across it to Badhan, about 95 km away .

history

Ruins from the time of the Warsangali Sultanate in Las Khorey.

Laasqorey is several centuries old and the site of several historical buildings and archaeological sites that are still largely unexplored. It served as the capital of the Warsangeli Sultanate , which was very influential in the region until colonization by Great Britain .

Between 2007 and 2009 it was part of the core area of the short-lived autonomous state of Maakhir .

economy

Laasqorey has the first and so far only fish factory in Somalia, as well as various other industries. The non-governmental organization Adeso (previously Horn Relief ) and local actors are working on the development of the city in order to increase the importance of trade via the port of Laasqorey as well as with the hinterland, to create employment opportunities and to expand the infrastructure.

There is a small airport in the southwest of the city.

politics

For many years, Laasqorey was much less affected by the Somali civil war than places in central or southern Somalia. The border dispute between Somaliland and Puntland , which has lasted for years , mixed with disputes between the various North Somali clans and unresolved political questions about whether to stick to a common Somalia with Puntland or better support Somaliland in its attempt to be recognized as a new independent state, are repeated again and again to the threat.

In July 2008 Somaliland troops invaded Laasqorey and occupied the city and the port, ostensibly to free kidnapped Germans who had been held there by pirates (see piracy off the coast of Somalia ). Puntland had previously withdrawn its troops from Laasqorey at the request of local clan elders who wanted to negotiate in a neutral framework about the release of the abductees. Representatives of the Punic military declared that they wanted to retake the place.
