The Bhumibol Dam ( Thai : เขื่อน ภูมิพล , including: Yan-hi Dam , เขื่อน ยัน ฮี ) in the district ( Amphoe ) Sam Ngao of Tak Province in northern Thailand was developed by 1953 bis 1964 built. The inauguration was in May 1964.
The 154 meter high and 486 meter long dam is one of the largest in Southeast Asia. The dam is named after King Bhumibol Adulyadej and was previously called the Yanhee Dam. One source even gives the height of the dam wall above the foundation at 245 meters. The barrier structure, a curved gravity dam, is the second tallest in Thailand after the Queen Sirikit Dam .
The dam dams the Mae Nam Ping ( Ping River ), a tributary of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ), to form a 12,200 million cubic meter reservoir , the Mae Ping Lake. The reservoir is part of the Mae Ping National Park . In terms of area, it is the largest reservoir in Thailand and the second largest in terms of storage capacity.
The hydropower plant on the dam generates electricity with an output of 535 MW, primarily for the greater Bangkok area . Another source gives 737.5 MW. The dam is also used to regulate the water in the Mae Nam Ping and Mae Nam Chao Phraya rivers and for recreational purposes. From the dam you can take a boat 140 kilometers upstream to Chiang Mai .
