Abyei ( Arabic أبيي, DMG Abyī ) is the capital of the disputed Abyei area between Sudan and South Sudan . Administratively, like the entire area, it is assigned to both the northern state of Dschanub Kurdufan and the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal , which is part of South Sudan .

reachability

The nearest neighboring city is Bentiu . From there, an unpaved road that is known to be dangerous leads to Abyei. The journey time is around six hours.

Conflicts

There are always violent incidents between Arab - Muslim nomads ( Misseriye ) and African farmers , mostly Christians and animists . In May 2008, fighting broke out in Abyei between southern and northern Sudanese troops, during which the city was largely destroyed and most of the residents fled.

Sudan and South Sudan have not yet been able to agree on which side of the border the city should be on after the independence of the south, planned for July 9, 2011. A referendum failed because the two sides could not agree on which parts of the population were eligible to vote in this regard. On May 21, 2011, troops of the Sudanese army and militiamen from the Misseriye entered the city after heavy fighting. The Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir dissolved the city's administrative council, which had previously been made up of representatives from both sides. As a result, there were massive refugee movements. According to the UN and the Not on Our Watch organization , there were looting and arson by Northern Sudanese soldiers together with militiamen from the Misseriye people. The northern Sudanese troops initially failed to respond to the UN Security Council's requests to evacuate the city.

On June 20, 2011, the government of Sudan and the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, ruling South Sudan, signed an agreement on the interim status of the resource-rich Abyois. In it, both sides decided to withdraw their troops from the region and set up the UN peace mission UNISFA, which consists of Ethiopian troops . The governor of the region should be nominated by the SPLM and confirmed to Sudan, the vice-governor should be determined in the reverse procedure. Sudan and South Sudan jointly funded the region's budget. The final status of the region should be worked out by a committee of the African Union . According to a September 2014 report by the UN envoy for Abeyi, armed members of the Sudanese oil police and the SPLM are still in the region. The 2011 agreement has not yet been fully implemented. In an unrecognized referendum in October 2013, 99% of the members of the Ngok Dinka voted for Abyei to join South Sudan. The Misseriya then announced that they would hold their own vote in their community.

Although diplomatic relations between South Sudan and Sudan have improved and Abyei is a demilitarized zone, the question of territory remains unresolved.
