from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Andreas Hofer barracks is a barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces in Absam .

History of the barracks

Headquarters of the 6th Jäger Brigade in Absam

Since 1900 the 157,381 m² area has been used as the Thaurer Mure shooting range . In 1939 the Reich Treasury "Heer" bought the site. From 1940 the construction of the barracks began there.

In 1945 the barracks were confiscated by the French occupying forces . After the looting by locals, only ruins remained of the buildings.

It was not until 1952 that the barracks were expanded and moved into by a French engineer unit, who completed part of their 36-month military service here. In December 1953, the barracks were handed over to the commandant of the 1st subdivision of the Tyrol I Gendarmerie School, Staff Assistant Rudolf Seyerl.

The Austrian Armed Forces have been stationed in the barracks since September 22, 1955. In 1989 and 1992 extensive renovations were carried out and some new buildings were built.

In recognition of the Tyrolean struggle for freedom , many barracks in the state were given historical names of the Tyrolean freedom fighters. This is why the barracks in Absam are known as " Andreas Hofer barracks".
