The Vorarlberg People's Party (also ÖVP Vorarlberg ) is the regional organization of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) in the state of Vorarlberg . Since 1945, it has provided the governor and other leading state politicians in Vorarlberg. The party has its seat in the Bregenz Römerstrasse, opposite the Vorarlberger Landhaus .
Since the state elections in 2019 , the Vorarlberg People's Party has had 17 seats in the Vorarlberg state parliament and sends two members, Heike Eder and Christine Schwarz-Fuchs, to the Austrian Federal Council . The ÖVP Vorarlberg has been ruling since 2014 together with the Vorarlberg Greens in a black-green coalition in the Vorarlberg state government . In addition to the governor, it also provides the governor and three other regional councilors.
history
The ÖVP Vorarlberg began its official party work at the end of September 1945, although no exact date of foundation has been recorded. On October 9, 1945, the French military government granted permission to found a party to all three state-sponsoring parties (in addition to the ÖVP, the Communist and Socialist Parties). On a provisional basis, Ulrich Ilg from Dornbirn , who had already been active in the Christian Social Party before the annexation to the German Reich , took over the leadership of the Vorarlberg People's Party. He was subsequently appointed by the French as President of the Vorarlberg State Committee and after the first state election in Vorarlberg in 1945 , in which the ÖVP Vorarlberg achieved 70.2% of the votes, he was sworn in as Governor and President of the State Parliament.

Sub-organizations
The Vorarlberg People's Party, like the federal ÖVP, is divided into sub-organizations, the so-called “leagues”. Membership in one of the sub-organizations of the ÖVP Vorarlberg usually also means membership in the state party and, in addition, in the federal party. All six ÖVP groups have regional organizations in Vorarlberg:
- ÖAAB Vorarlberg
- The workers' association (AAB) is the oldest of the Vorarlberg ÖVP associations. It was founded in 1945. The chairman of the AAB Vorarlberg is currently the mayor and member of the state parliament, Harald Witwer .
- Vorarlberg farmers' union
- The Bauernbund is the representation of farmers within the ÖVP. The Vorarlberg Farmers' Union was founded in 1946 and is currently chaired by the President of the Austrian Chambers of Agriculture, Josef Moosbrugger , as chairman.
- Women's movement Vorarlberg
- The Vorarlberg women's movement has been representing the interests of women vis-à-vis the ÖVP state party since 1947. Originally it was run as an independent association and only subsequently incorporated into the statutes of the state party as a sub-organization. Regional Councilor Martina Rüscher is chairwoman of the Vorarlberg women's movement .
- Vorarlberg Economic Association
- The Wirtschaftsbund was founded in Vorarlberg in 1946 to represent the interests of entrepreneurs. The hotelier Hans-Peter Metzler acts as chairman of the Vorarlberg Economic Association .
- Senior Citizens' Association Vorarlberg
- The senior citizens' union is one of the largest groups of members of the ÖVP Vorarlberg and represents the senior citizens within the Vorarlberg People's Party. Its chairman is the former member of the state parliament Werner Huber .
- JVP Vorarlberg
- The Young People's Party Vorarlberg was founded in 1964 as an independent association and was only included in the party statute of the ÖVP Vorarlberg as a sub-organization in 1967. It represents young people and young adults until they transfer to one of the other ÖVP leagues. The current chairman of the JVP Vorarlberg is Raphael Wichtl , member of the state parliament .
