Emil Kraft (politician, 1865)

Emil Kraft (born January 26, 1865 in Vienna , † September 5, 1931 in Graz - Geidorf , Styria ) was an Austrian national German - Greater German politician , and 1922–1923 Federal Minister for Trade and Commerce, Industry and Buildings and for People's Nutrition .

Life

Emil force studied at the in Feldberg and Klosterneuburg based agricultural schools in Lower Austria Business Administration . Then he was briefly manager of an estate in what was then Lower Styria , in what is now the Slovenian town of Gonobitz ( Slovenske Konjice ), and also worked as an independent businessman in what is now the Graz district of Mariatrost . Most recently he passed the exam to become a teacher for agricultural schools.

Kraft owned larger stores in Meran , Graz ( Emil Kraft & Co ) and in Baden near Vienna . His political career began with his election as a councilor in Baden near Vienna in 1894.

In Baden in 1892 he was the founder of the trotting club, for a long time chairman of the board of directors, co-founder of the international sports field , the spa commission and several clubs.

After the death of his father in 1902, Kraft moved to South Tyrol in 1905 , where he was elected second Vice Mayor of Merano in 1908 . In 1911 he became a member of the Reichsrat for the spa district of Bozen -Meran . On September 24, 1915 established force with August of thought (1852-1926) under the German Austrian Association of Cities in Vienna the Austrian Association of Cities and until 1919 its vice-president. In 1918 he was appointed to the supervisory board of the Austro-Hungarian Bank and to the board of directors of the Südbahngesellschaft . After the end of the First World War , Kraft was part of the German-Austrian delegation, which, under the leadership of State Chancellor Karl Renner, accepted the Treaty of Saint-Germain .

From October 21, 1918 to February 16, 1919, Kraft was one of the 208 Reichsrat members who formed the Provisional National Assembly for German Austria , as a member of the German National Party (DnP). On February 16, 1919, he was elected to the Constituent National Assembly, which met for the first time in Vienna on March 4, 1919 and lasted until October 1, 1920. Kraft was now a member of the Greater German People's Party (GDVP) for the constituency of Graz and the surrounding area.

On May 31, 1922, Federal Chancellor Ignaz Seipel appointed him Federal Minister for Trade and Commerce , Industry and Buildings in the Federal Government Seipel I and at the same time entrusted him with the Federal Ministry for People's Nutrition . Emil Kraft was minister for almost a year and left office on April 17, 1923 when the entire government resigned. During his tenure, among other things, the Austro-Hungarian Bank was dissolved in what is now the Oesterreichische Nationalbank ; Austria's electricity system, which was badly damaged after the war, was also rehabilitated under his leadership. In October 1923, Kraft was re-elected to the National Council, but soon resigned his mandate and retired to the village of Mariagrün (in what is now the Graz- Mariatrost district ).

Kraft also wrote articles for numerous German-language newspapers, including the Munich-Augsburger Abendzeitung , the Meraner Zeitung and the Grazer Tagespost . Early on, he pointed out the financial developments that would lead to the first world economic crisis in history, 1928 to 1930.

After long and severe suffering , Emil Kraft died in the morning hours of September 5, 1931 in the sanatorium of the Kreuz Sisters , Graz Geidorf . He was buried in the family crypt on September 8, 1931 in the city cemetery of Baden near Vienna.
