Barrows in the Schandorf Forest

Location of the groups

The barrow field Schandorfer Wald (also Schandorfer Bauernwald ) is located in the Burgenland municipality of Schandorf on the border with Hungary . The graves date from the Hallstatt period and the Roman Empire . Four of the five groups in Schandorf are under monument protection ( list entry ).

The Schandorf burial mound necropolis was founded in the 8th to the 6th century BC. It is one of the most important structures of this type in Europe because of the strikingly large burial mounds and the very good preservation of the same including the surrounding ditches from which the earth material was taken.

So far, five groups of burial mounds of the Hallstatt culture are known, comprising a total of 285 burial mounds . In the Schandorf Forest there are a total of 170 burial mounds, divided into three groups of 150 (group I, location ), 11 (group II, location ) and 9 (group IV, location ) burial mounds. Groups III ( Lage ) and V in Schandorf come from the older Roman Empire. Two further groups of Hallstatt culture are located in Badersdorf with 30 burial mounds and on Eisenberg ( 415  m ) in the cadastral municipality of Burg and the Hungarian municipality of Felsőcsatár with 84 hills.

The Schandorf burial mounds were mentioned at an archaeological congress in Budapest in 1878, but were forgotten again. Research was only resumed in 1930 at the instigation of Pastor Peter Jandrisevits. In 1933 a Group I mound was excavated, and a stone packing and a burial chamber made of large stone slabs were found. Two multi-headed needles, conical neck vessels with black and red painting and figural attachments, a bronze vessel and iron implements were found. The black and red painting of a conical neck vessel shows the stylized representation of a man with a broad-brimmed hat, as is typical of the sophisticated festive costume.
