Smolenice (German Smolenitz , Hungarian Szomolány ) is a municipality in Slovakia about 17 kilometers northwest of Trnava .
It consists of the places Smolenice and Smolenická Nová Ves , which was called Neštich ( Neustift , Hungarian Jánostelek ) until 1948 and was incorporated in 1960.
Smolenice was mentioned for the first time in 1256 and is best known for the Smolenice Castle . A Renaissance church was built from 1642 to 1644. From 1705 to 1707 the place was occupied by the Turks .
To the west of the village is the Driny cave , which is currently the only show cave in western Slovakia .
