Opoj (Hungarian Apaj ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,269 (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Trnava , part of the Trnavský kraj .

geography

The municipality is located on the eastern edge of the Trnavská pahorkatina hills between the Dolný Dudváh rivers east and Trnávka west of the village. The center of the village is at an altitude of 132  m nm and is ten kilometers from Sereď and Trnava .

Neighboring municipalities are Vlčkovce in the north and east, Majcichov in the south-west and Zeleneč in the north-west.

history

Opoj Church

Opoj was first mentioned in writing as Opoy in 1266 . At first it belonged to the estate of the Pressburg Castle and was later ruled by various members of the lower nobility. In 1828 there were 91 houses and 665 inhabitants who traditionally lived from agriculture.

Until 1918, the place in Pressburg County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

From 1975 to 1990 Opoj was part of the Dudváh municipality together with Vlčkovce and Križovany nad Dudváhom .

population

According to the 2011 census, 947 inhabitants lived in Opoj, 897 of them Slovaks and one each Magyar, Moravian, Pole, Russian and Ukrainian; one resident indicated a different ethnic group. 44 residents gave no information in this regard. 785 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Seventh-day Adventists, three residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, the Evangelical Church AB, the Reformed Church and the Czechoslovakian Church. Hussite Church; two residents professed a different denomination. 50 residents had no denomination and 98 residents had no denomination.
