The Prinz-Albrecht-Park , or Prinzenpark for short , is a 58-hectare park in the eastern ring area in Braunschweig . The mixed-style park, which was planned as planned around the turn of the century in 1900, is now a cultural monument. With the adjoining Franzschen Feld , the Nussberg , the city park and the allotment gardens and green areas around the Mittelriede and Wabe brooks to the east, it forms an extensive recreational area near the city center. The Riddagshausen nature reserve begins east of the honeycomb .

history

The Prinzenpark was built from 1895 on the former site of the large parade ground. The large parade ground was built in 1824 following a decree by Duke Karl II and moved to Salzdahlumer Strasse in 1887. At the time of its creation, the park was already outside the boundaries of the city of Braunschweig, although it was adjacent to the residential streets of the eastern ring area. It was not incorporated into the city until a few decades later. The realization of the park was funded by the regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig, Prince Albrecht of Prussia . The park was named after him. The park was implemented by the Brunswick ducal promenade inspector Friedrich Kreiß according to the plans of the gardening director Fintelmann. The park was completed in 1905. In autumn 1911 the memorial stone for the regent Prince Albrecht was erected.

In the northwest, an oval square was created, which was converted into a roller skating rink in 1950. In July 1981 the fountain system with water stairs at the roller skating rink was completed. A 3.5 km long and 9 m wide paved circular path belongs to the park.

The historic park was renovated from 2005 to 2008. A maintenance and development concept for the Prinz-Albrecht-Park was created. The restoration measures included the restoration of spatial structures and visual relationships. Paths and seating areas were rehabilitated or restored and previously removed woody stands were replanted.

Sport in the Prinzenpark

Some paths in the park are suitable for horse riding. In the northern part there is a fitness trail . In addition to a roller-skating rink , which was built in the western part in 1950 and which was converted into a facility for skateboarders and inline skaters at the end of the 20th century , the stadium of the sports club Freie Turnerschaft Braunschweig is located in the center , and the police stadium is located in the park and is adjacent to the north the Franzsches Feld district sports facility at the Prinzenpark. The Nussberg, also located in the park, is mainly used for tobogganing in winter and for kite flying in autumn .

Between 1948 and 1951, the Prinzenpark race , a motorsport event for motorcycles and small racing cars, took place in and around the Prinzenpark .

NBA star Dennis Schröder was discovered playing basketball in Prinzenpark as a child .
