The Arboretum Riddagshausen is an arboretum from the 19th century in the Buchhorst southeast of the Braunschweig district of Riddagshausen . The arboretum has around 100 tree species and is located next to the forest forum and the game reserve. One of the oldest trees is a holm oak from 1838.

history

The arboretum was founded in 1838 by Theodor Hartig as a ducal forest garden . Hartig was a professor in the forestry department of the Collegium Carolinum . The three hectare area was used for forest botanical lessons and the cultivation of plants. Hartig developed an important arborist collection on the site. The German Dendrological Society described the arboretum in 1920 as one of the most important tree collections in Germany.

With the construction of a railway line in 1869 and the construction of the Reichsjägerhof in the 1930s, the arboretum suffered some loss of space. In 1935 the forest garden became part of the Reichsjägerhof Foundation, which was later taken over by the State of Lower Saxony. In 1955 it was handed over to the city of Braunschweig.

After the arboretum had largely lost its original shape, it was renovated in 1998 and 1999 with the help of the Richard Borek Foundation and designed in a park-like shape. The facility was supplemented by ponds, benches and tables. The arboretum counted about 80 tree species.

Between 2014 and 2016 the signage was renewed and the trees were added.
