Today the city park is characterized by a planting of dense and tall deciduous trees.

history

When the city park was built, it was still outside the residential area. There was once a small wooded area here that was originally used as a ducal pheasantry. It was called the little stick and could be reached via Brunnenstrasse. Only with the emergence of the eastern ring area did the residential development move to the park. With the progressive development of the ring area, Brunnenstrasse disappeared. In 1884, Promenade Inspector Friedrich Kreiß redesigned this wooded area into a park with a structured system of paths and a swan pond. The Stadtparkrestaurant, which still exists today, opened on March 14, 1884. The restaurant was built as a half-timbered building with brick infill according to the plans of the architect Ludwig Winter and was intended to serve as an inn for walkers . In 1887, due to its popularity, two wings were added. In 1907 a wooden bandstand designed by Ludwig Winter was built.

In 1909 the Franzsche Feld behind the city park was rented for play and gymnastics purposes.

The colonial monument was unveiled on June 14, 1925. Jasperallee (at that time Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße ) has been running through the city park since the 1930s . Since then, the park has been divided into a north half and a south half. This extension was planned by Ludwig Winter in the site plan of 1889. The bandstand was destroyed in the Second World War. The pavilion was replaced by a new steel structure. In 1958 the Stadtpark branch of the public library opened. A weekly market has been held in the city park since 1992.

In 2004 the CDU demanded that Ludwig Winter's music pavilion be rebuilt with the help of a foundation. These plans were not implemented, but the new music pavilion was renovated in 2008 and part of it was clad with natural stones.
