Park Muenchenstrasse

Plan of the area

Parkanlage Münchenstrasse is the project name of a planned park in the Danube Quarter in Braunschweig's Weststadt . The project envisages the conversion of a fallow area into a park. In new reports it is also referred to as Quartierspark Am Queckenberg .

The area is divided into a northwestern smaller part, which is partly crossed with meadows, and a larger southeastern part with high and dense trees. A field borders the forest-like green area. The new park in the east of Weststadt is being built between Ludwig-Winter-Straße, Am Queckenberg, Am Lehmanger and the A 391 . The park is to be designed in a modern style.

history

The fallow area was part of the premises of the Braunschweig-Broitzem Air Base and the Broitzemer Strasse barracks until 1945. Some of the buildings on this site were blown up after 1945 or used commercially for some time before they were also demolished. Before the development of the airfield and the adjacent buildings, fields and meadows extended in this area.

There were already plans for this park in the 1970s. However, for a long time the financing for a realization could not be secured. With the development plan WI 63 BI "Altes Kasernengelände Münchenstrasse" , which was approved in 1987 and is still valid today , and thus also in the zoning plan, the area was defined as a public parking area. In addition, sports fields and a club house were to be built to the east.

When the city of Braunschweig applied for the title of European Capital of Culture 2010 in 2004, the park should also be one of the contributions for the 2010 program year. The city advertised the area as a “Hortus Curiosus” and as a versatile experience space. As a park of the 21st century, it was to complement the parks in Braunschweig in 2010. However, Braunschweig was eliminated as a candidate.

Another attempt to implement the project was made when the area was registered for various state urban development programs. From 2008, the park was to be co-financed with ERDF funds and funds from the Social City, which the city had not received.

In April 2016, the Danube Quarter was finally included in the “Socially Integrative City” urban development program. The park is one of the main redevelopment focuses when registering for the “Socially Integrative City” program and for the planned urban renewal. This means that, for the first time, financial resources are available for specific planning and construction work.

When redesigning the area into a cross-district recreational area, nature conservation, open space planning and social aspects should be taken into account. Since the tree population has been able to develop undisturbed since the 1960s and some trees were planted as street trees before 1960, trees that are 55 years and older can now be found on the site (as of 2016). The planning of the city of Braunschweig for the ring track envisages the networking of the park with the south-east running western ring track.
