The Heidbergsee is a former groundwater-filled gravel pit in the southeast of Braunschweig, consisting of two connected lakes . It is a central part of the green area known as Heidbergpark in the Heidberg district .

geography

The two-part body of water with an area of around 15 ha is at an altitude of 76  m above sea level. NHN . It has an average depth of 20.4m but also has some flattened sections. The surrounding bank lies at a level of 80 m between the lakes and 86 m on the north bank.

The entire green area between the development in the west, Salzdahlumer Straße in the east and Heidbergstieg in the south is called Heidbergpark, the size of which is given as 24.43 hectares. From Dresdenstraße to the eastern border there is a path for pedestrians and cyclists with the same name, which, in addition to the green areas, also opens up the Heidberg sports complex . The park borders the near-natural Mascheroder Holz forest to the north and east, which is also known as Kohli-Holz in the southern part . In the northeast, beyond Salzdahlumer Straße, the area of the Südstadtpark joins.

Expansion into a recreation area and bathing lake

Gravel mining has been going on since the 1950s. The northern lake has been used for swimming since the 1970s. After quarrying the gravel in the southern lake, the entire area was redesigned from 2000 to a bathing and sunbathing area. The banks of the southern water in particular have been converted into gently sloping beaches so that non-swimmers can safely stay in the edge area of the water. The banks have been signposted to the effect that some areas are expressly excluded from swimming. Bathing in the other areas is at your own risk . As in other gravel ponds, bathing is associated with dangers, especially for non-swimmers, as the bottom of the pond slopes steeply in places. In addition, dangerous eddies can be expected from some very uneven, cold and deep spots . According to the ordinance to maintain public safety in the city of Braunschweig, bathing in the Heidbergsee is not allowed, but is tolerated.

The groundwater collected in the lake is naturally clear. The water quality is not officially monitored by the health department of the city of Braunschweig, as the lake is not considered to be bathing water.

The Heidbergsee is a popular destination for Braunschweig families, young people and a meeting place for barbecues. The parking lot for visitors to the lake and a public toilet are located on Salzdahlumer Straße directly in the Jägersruh district . Maintenance and rubbish disposal are regularly carried out by the urban green department of the city of Braunschweig.

place of residence

The redesign of the southern lake was used for a high-quality settlement of the eastern edge area. This belongs to the district Jägersruh.

natural reserve

In the landscape framework plan of the city of Braunschweig, the tolerance of extensive forms of recreation in harmony with nature conservation is planned for the Heidbergsee, which is to be achieved by creating buffer zones for biotope development.

The species development is officially monitored, the protection of toads during the migration is actively supported by students from the Heidberg school center.
