The park in spring

The Kiryat-Tivon-Park is a 2.3 hectare park in the city center of Braunschweig . The park is located south of the old town and borders in the north on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, in the east on Nimes-Straße, in the south on a hotel, formerly the leisure and education center and in the west on the Westliche Umflutgraben and the Bürgerpark with the Volkswagen hall . The park is mainly characterized by a large, currently nameless pond.

history

The park was created from 1805 between two arms of the Oker and was initially called the Rönckendorff Garden and was owned by the merchant Röttger Rönckendorff. The garden was probably laid out according to plans by Peter Joseph Krahe . Due to its location at the old train station , the park was named Eisenbahnpark and later Bahnhofspark. The main station was moved to the Ostbahnhof in 1960. In 1971 the sculpture Octahedron Cube was erected by Karl-Ludwig Schmaltz.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the town twinning with the Israeli city of Kiryat Tivon , the park was renamed Kiryat-Tivon-Park on June 6th, 1996 during a visit by a delegation from the twin town from June 4th to 7th, 1996 in the presence of Mayor Shmuel Abuav .

On May 22nd, 2008 the mayor of the Israeli twin town Alon Navot planted a sweetgum tree as a token of friendship between Braunschweig and Kiryat Tivon. On October 26, 2014, strangers felled this tree, which was planted in 2008, and left an ax stuck in the tree trunk. In 2014, the old bald cypress, designated as a natural monument, was felled for safety reasons. On January 30, 2015, in the presence of Renate Wagner-Redding (chairwoman of the Jewish community in Braunschweig), Johannes-Henrich Kirchner (chairman of the German-Israeli Society Braunschweig), Hans-Horst Larisch (board member of the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation Lower Saxony- Ost) and the First City Councilor Christian Geiger planted a new sweetgum tree as a symbol of the partnership between Braunschweig and Kiryat Tivon.

The School's Out Party has been held annually in Kiryat-Tivon-Park since 2005, after the old venue, the castle park , was built on. The garden fair "Spring Delight" has been held in the park every year since 2007.
