The Lichtparcours 2010 was an exhibition of contemporary art in public space that took place from June 19, 2010 to September 30, 2010 along the Umflutgräben and the Oker in Braunschweig . The light course comprised seven temporary installations and two permanent installations.

Boat and Segway tours were offered to explore the course. Starting May 14th, so-called light cubes (luminous plastic squares) were set up in the city center as information and signposts.

history

The selection committee consisted of Barbara Straka , Hilke Wagner, Anja Hesse and Michael Schwarz. On March 17th, a festival of lights was held on the Prinzenweg and Gieselerwall. The light course 2010 was opened on Saturday, June 19th in the Kiryat-Tivon-Park in the presence of the Lord Mayor Gert Hoffmann. At the beginning there was a festival with light and music staging, at which not only musicians but also artists such as stilt walkers performed in lighted costumes.

Artists and projects

The artists Thomas Bartels, Jeppe Hein , Jan Köchermann, Rainer Gottemeier, Arend Zwicker, Christiane Stegat and Susanne Rottenbacher were involved.

The exhibits included: 1000 flowers, appearing rooms, settlements, Braunschweiger summit, 8.33%, spawn and color ring 450 d. The permanently installed objects evocation in red and arch of memory ( Okerlicht ) were included. The artists were free to choose the location of the installations within the Oker area.

Installations

  • 1) The installation "1000 Flowers" by Thomals Bartels was located on the eastern flood ditch near the Fallersleber-Tor bridge. It consisted of three modified concrete mixers filled with spotlights and pieces of colored glass that projected patterns onto the trees on the bank as they turned.
  • 2) The "Appearing Rooms" by Jeppe Hein was a pavilion made of water walls in Kiryat-Tivon-Park . These illuminated water walls disappeared in a programmed manner and gave access to the pavilion and its rooms. This created a labyrinth in which the visitors could go. The rooms changed in number and size.
  • 3) Jan Köchermann's “settlements” were located at three locations above the water: In the Bürgerpark , at the Hohetorbrücke and at the Bammelsburger Teich. The settlements consisted of several luminous house models that were built from a metal frame and covered with printed PVC film. By attaching strings to trees, they floated in the air.
  • 4) Rainer Gottemeier's "Braunschweiger Gipfel" was on the portico pond and the portico in the Bürgerpark. In addition to a text projection on the walls of the portico with the sentence “Look for the stars, watch out for the alleys” by Wilhelm Raabe, balls and neon rod buoys were distributed on the portico pond.
  • 5) “8.33%” by Arend Zwicker was an artificial iceberg with a reflective surface that was built in the Stadtbadteich in Kiryat-Tivon-Park. The iceberg turned on its own axis and was illuminated by headlights from the side. The name refers to the fact that ice in fresh water protrudes 8.33% from the water.
  • 6) Christiane Stegat's “Spawn” was at Neustadtmühlengraben at the Prinzenwegbrücke. It consisted of several small glowing spheres. As the English name suggests, it is a large replica of spawn. This spawn was arranged in such a way that it looked as if the spawn had come out of a house window and was moving towards the moat.
  • 7) The color ring 450 d by Susanne Rottenbacher was on the Hohetorwall. The plastic ring had several colored strips and LED light points inside. The strength of the light changed regularly.

Sequels

The fifth light course is planned for 2020. On October 25th and 26th, 2018, a colloquium of the LIFA (Light in Fine Arts) association will take place at the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig with the title “Light Art and Curatorial Action”. The conference is organized in cooperation with the Saar College of Fine Arts and the city of Braunschweig and marks the start of the curatorial work for the 5th light course.

In advance, some initiatives spoke out in favor of including the so-called Echo Bridge, a former railway bridge over the Oker on Kennelweg, in the 2020 Light Parcours.
