"Okerlicht" is a contemporary art project on the Oker and the flood ditches in Braunschweig . The project includes permanent installations in public urban space and emerged from the Braunschweig Parcours , where temporary art projects were exhibited. The art objects are to be realized in a process lasting several years and are to be realized and operated primarily through third-party funding.

Origin and aim of the project

The Lichtparcours 2000 , which for the first time combined temporary light art with the Okerbrücken and which was followed by a very positive response from the media and the population, gave the city of Braunschweig the impetus to permanently integrate a similar project into the cityscape.

The Okerum flood ditch characterizes the topography of the city of Braunschweig and frames the city center. As historical entrances, the Oker bridges point the way to the center. Crossed by thousands of passers-by every day, but often ignored, the Okerlicht project wants to put the urban river crossings in a new “light” and transform the conventional bridge crossing or the passage by boat into a sensual experience.

The light installation "Evocation in Red" at the Theaterbrücke opened the Okerlicht project in April 2008 .

Individual objects

Evocation in red

"Evocation in Red" is the first light installation of the Okerlicht project . It was put into operation on April 8, 2008. The Hanoverian artist Yvonne Goulbier designed the light art for the more than 100 years old Jasperallee bridge at the Theaterpark. The illumination is on the underside of the bridge arch. There are 150 red-glowing LED lamps designed in the shape of flowers and around 250 yellow ones, whose luminosity is caught and reflected by the river water. The bridge balustrade is encased in a delicate yellow veil of light and connects to the street lighting on the bridge. The state theater is included in the installation by a point of light moving back and forth on its rear wall. Metaphorically, the movements of the restless point represent the traffic on the bridge. The illumination is switched on every night until 1 a.m. and is also included in the 2010 light course .

Arch of memory

The “Arch of Remembrance” , also called “Plessi Arch” , by the artist Fabrizio Plessi is the oldest object and was part of the temporary exhibition “Lichtparcours 2000”, a project in Braunschweig for the EXPO 2000 . The arch was implemented by Gerhard Auer, it is located on Europaplatz. The inaccessible bridge is intended to awaken memories of the bridge to the Braunschweig train station that once stood here. Below her were 17 TV monitors, which could only be seen from the Oker.

In December 2008, the monitors that had not been in operation for a long time were replaced by blue LED lights and the Plessi arch was reactivated as the second object in the Okerlicht project.
