Friedrich Kreiss

Friedrich Kreiß (born August 28, 1842 in Ortenberg , † October 19, 1915 in Braunschweig ) was a German garden architect . As a ducal promenade inspector, he designed numerous parks in Braunschweig.

Life

Kreiß was born as the son of the architect and master mason Georg Kreiß in Ortenberg. After attending the trade school in Nidda , he completed a four-year gardening apprenticeship in the Count's Stolberg-Rossler nursery in Ortenberg. In 1864 Kreiß went to Braunschweig, where he worked for two years as a senior assistant in the ducal state tree school.

In 1866 he traveled to England to complete a two-year training course. While working as a head gardener in Great Britain, he worked on the expansion of Battersea Park near London . During this time he visited several historically important gardens and nurseries in England and Scotland. In 1868 he moved to Braunschweig, where from 1872 he worked as head gardener in the service of the general management of the ducal railways and in 1880 was taken over as promenade administrator in the Braunschweig civil service. In 1884 Duke Wilhelm appointed him Ducal Promenade Inspector. He held this office until 1914. Around 1900, Kreiß was commissioned to redesign the park at Etelsen Castle .

Brunswick parks

In 1868/69 he designed the "Eisenbahnpark", later the Bahnhofspark, located between today's Adenauerstrasse, Nîmesstrasse and the former Bürgerpark leisure and education center . In 1882, in collaboration with the architect Constantin Uhde, he had the Bammelsburger pond built not far from Villa Löbbecke on Inselwall . He created in 1884 the city park , designed since 1886 the station Park for public park around and was starting from 1895 the Princes invest.

Honors

Kreiß received a grave of honor at the main cemetery in Braunschweig . The Friedrich-Kreiß-Weg in the Braunschweig Bürgerpark was named after him.
