Theodor Hartig
Theodor Hartig (born February 21, 1805 in Dillenburg , † March 26, 1880 in Braunschweig ) was a German forest scientist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hartig ".
Live and act
Theodor Hartig was the son of the forest scientist Georg Ludwig Hartig and the younger brother of Friedrich Hartig . After his school days in Berlin, he completed a forestry apprenticeship from 1821, first in Pomerania and then in the Mark Brandenburg . He then studied forest sciences at the Forest Academy (from 1821 to 1830 in Berlin, later Higher Forestry School Neustadt-Eberswalde ) and the University of Berlin. After completing his studies, he became a forest trainee in Potsdam .
From 1831 Hartig held lectures at the Berlin Forest Academy and published his first scientific work. In 1837 he took over the professorship from his late father at the University of Berlin. Since the transfer of the forest academy to Eberswalde was almost complete, the number of students and his lectures decreased. Hartig moved to the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig in 1838 , where he was appointed Professor of Forest Science. Shortly after his arrival, Hartig founded the arboretum in the Buchhorst near Riddagshausen . The forest garden served the new forestry department of the Collegium Carolinum for scientific purposes, in particular for teaching forest botany and general forestry culture. In 1838 Hartig was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
In 1839 his son Robert Hartig , who also became a well-known forest scientist, was born in Braunschweig .
Hartig's detailed study of the anatomy and physiology of wood plants led to the discovery of aleurone grains and sieve tubes . Due to his scientific research, Hartig became a member of the Leopoldina . In 1862 he became a co-founder of the Braunschweig Science Association.
In 1878 Hartig retired for health reasons and died in Braunschweig in 1880.
