Hans-Joachim Friedrich Julius Weimann (born August 19, 1932 in Kassel ; † December 14, 2012 ) was a German forest scientist . He from 1986 to 1997 head of the Hesse Forest Management Institute and its successor institution, the Hessian State Institute of Forest Management, Forest Research and Forest Ecology casting / Hann. Münden. The specialist in agriculture and forestry valuation theory and pioneer of forestry computer science has also emerged with forest history work, especially on the Hartig forest family , and has been intensively researching the green areas of the Giessen region and their history since 1985 .

Life

Hans-Joachim Weimann was born on August 19, 1932 as the son of a tax officer in Kassel. After graduating from the Staatliche Gymnasium and Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden , he studied forest sciences at the forestry faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Hann. Münden and at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . After his legal clerkship , which he completed in 1961 with the Great State State Examination in Forestry , he began his service at what was then the Forestry Institution in Gießen, where his entire professional life - more than 36 years in total - was to be spent. His mathematical talent predestined him to take over the newly established " Business Administration " department in 1966 . He worked intensively on this subject in the following years. With the dissertation process for determining changes in the value of forest resources in the context of forest income calculation Weimann was 1969 Mathematical Natural Sciences at the Faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg Dr. rer. nat. PhD . In 1983 he qualified as a professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen with a thesis on forest soil numbers for agriculture and forestry valuation. From 1990 to 2000 he held lectures at Giessen University as an adjunct professor for forest planning for students on the "Environment" course.

At the Hessische Forsteinrichtungsanstalt Weimann became department head for forest management and at the same time its deputy head. In 1986 he succeeded August Hennes as head of the company. A major turning point was the merger of the Hessischer Forsteinrichtungsanstalt in Gießen and the Hessischer Forstlicher Versuchsanstalt in Hann in 1994. Münden. The agency grew from a staff unit of the state forest administration with tasks of medium-term operational planning to the Hessian state institute for forest management, forest research and forest ecology Gießen / Hann, responsible for the entire Hessian forest of all types of ownership . Münden with the service areas IT , mapping , medium and long-term planning, control and science (forestry research). On August 14, 1997, Hans-Joachim Weimann retired as its director.

He married his wife Freya, a pharmacist from Kassel, in 1961. The marriage resulted in two sons. Hans-Joachim Weimann lived in Rodheim-Bieber .

Services

Forest assessment and forest informatics

Hans-Jürgen Weimann has played a key role in determining and shaping the business and data-related developments in forest management and forest valuation far beyond the boundaries of Hesse. As a specialist in the fields of forest valuation and soil valuation , he was the initiator and 1979 founding chairman of the forest valuation working group of the federal states, which he headed until 1986. His pioneering work in this area is also reflected in the fact that, as a reviewer on problems of forest valuation and damage estimation, he is the one with the largest number of publications among German authors in the post-war period.

In addition, from 1961 he took on the role of computer scientist - also as a programmer - at the Hessische Forsteinrichtungsanstalt . He carried out fundamental development work with the organization of electronic data processing (EDP) for forest management, the establishment of the forest information system in the areas of " location " and " land maintenance ". For the first time in Germany, Weimann developed a decentralized PC process for updating, adding and evaluating forest management files. It turned out to be practical and quickly met with a high level of acceptance. Weimann also created numerous PC programs for forest value and damage assessment and developed calculation methods for quantifying lump-sum forest damage components. He was also involved in the design of the Hessian biotope mapping.

In addition, Hans-Jürgen Weimann was active in various bodies and commissions, for example since 1992 as a member and since 1996 as chairman of the forest history committee in the Hessian Forest Association and since 1987 as a member and from 2000 to 2004 as chairman of the council of Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Foundation . He has been a board member of the Gail'scher Park Circle of Friends since 2000 , where he also contributed his knowledge and experience.

Commitment as a historian and publicist

Weimann's best-known forest history works include his studies on the Hartig forest family, including above all Georg Ludwig Hartig , Theodor Hartig and Robert Hartig , which are included in the book Hartigiana. Georg Ludwig Hartig in the midst of five generations of a forester family. Finds and connections (1990) culminated. In addition, he wrote numerous articles for almost all German-language forestry journals .

Since 1985, Hans-Joachim Weimann has dealt with the green areas of the city of Gießen - here a view from the forest garden over the pond in the botanical garden

In 1997, when he left the State Institute for Forest Management, Forest Research and Forest Ecology, he wrote the collection of anecdotes The dry puddle . The title alludes to the report of an accident by an employee who claimed to have slipped on a dry puddle.

Since 1985 he has also worked as a publicist on Giessen green spaces and other local history topics. In addition to publications about the Gail'schen Park and its history, Weimann also worked on the family and company history of the Gails. For his more recent publications he mostly used the CD-ROM as a medium. This is how, among others, The Gardens of the Ludoviciana (2001), Tobacco Smoke and Gartenlust (2003), Journeys by Dr. Georg Gail (2003), Georg Edward: Diaries 1892–1969 and Autobiography 1869–1893 (2005). Further contributions from him appeared in the communications of the Upper Hessian History Association .

Finally, he was able to complete two comprehensive biographies of the forest classics Carl Justus Heyer and Johann Christian Hundeshagen .

By 2009, Hans-Joachim Weimann had published around 150 publications on forest topics, including information technology, wood measurement , forest inventory , forest planning and control, forest assessment and damage assessment, forest and cultural history, and others on park and garden art. There was also a wide range of lectures.
