Orange is a New England town in Grafton County , New Hampshire . In 2019 there were 289 inhabitants. The name may be derived from ocher deposits on Mount Cardigan.
geography
Orange is characterized by a loose settlement structure without an actual core location. It is located in Grafton County , in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire between Alexandria to the east, Grafton to the south, Canaan to the west and Groton to the north.
history
The village was founded as a Cardigan by Governor John Wentworth in 1769. The name had been in use before. In 1779 residents petitioned for the town to be officially registered in order to raise taxes and requested that the name be changed to Bradford or Warwick. The petition was denied and a new petition was filed in 1783 to change the name to Middleton. This was also rejected, whereupon the name Liscomb was suggested for the third time in 1789. When it was registered in 1790, this name was not used either. Instead, it was subsequently replaced by orange in the certificate.
Administration and public institutions
As a town of New England style, Orange has no mayor. The administration is incumbent on three elected city councils. Most of the community's affairs are done by volunteers, such as fire and emergency medical services, the latter being done by volunteers from Canaan. Orange does not have its own police station. The closest hospitals are Darthmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center or Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, both in Lebanon .
education
Orange is part of the Mascoma Valley Regional School District. There is only one childcare facility on site.
economy
The largest local employer with fourteen employees is a company that offers, among other things, the disposal of construction waste and wood harvest waste.
traffic
US 4 and a former railway line that has been converted into the Northern Rail Trail run through the Orange area . Orange did not have its own train station, it was in Canaan.
Attractions
The main attraction of Orange is Mount Cardigan, which gives Cardigan Mountain State Park its name.
