Bristol is a town in the extreme southeast of Grafton County in New Hampshire , USA, a town according to New England understanding. It is located in the west of the New Hampshire Lake District south of Newfound Lake , the third largest lake exclusively located in New Hampshire, at the confluence of the Newfound River in the Pemigewasset , between Bridgewater in the north, New Hampton in the east, Hill in the south and Alexandria in the west . The name refers to Bristol in England.

history

Massachusetts settlers moved to what is now Bristol around 1770 . The Bristol parish was incorporated in 1819, one year after a first Methodist church was established. In 1820 there were already 675 inhabitants. Before the foundation, the parish belonged partly to Bridgewater, partly to New Chester, today's Hill. Bristol was an industrial site that produced paper, leather, wool, flannel, bed frames and piano stools. The goods produced were transported to Franklin by rail .

Administration and municipal institutions

Bristol is administered as a town, so it has a council and no mayor. The municipal council has five members who are each elected for three years. The terms of office are staggered so that not all councils can be elected at once. The legislative assembly is the Town Meeting, which is held in March each year. The police and fire brigade work full-time. The nearest hospital is the Speare Memorial in Plymouth, fourteen miles away . The city is responsible for the water supply with waterworks and sewage treatment plants. Recycling takes place on a voluntary basis.

economy

The largest employer in Bristol is the Newfound Area School District, which is responsible for Alexandria, Bridgewater, Bristol, Danbury , Groton , Hebron and New Hampton, followed by a branch of a German-Japanese joint venture in the field of sealing, vibration and elastomer technology and the Town of Bristol itself. Other businesses include shops, a bank, restaurants and a timber trade, as well as smaller businesses. In Bristol are the Newfound Regional High School (Newfound Regional High S.), which is responsible for the entire school district, as well as the Newfound Memorial Middle and Bristol Elementary Schools.

traffic

Bristol is at the junction of the Danbury to Meredith state highways on Lake Winnipesaukee , which crosses Interstate 93 nine kilometers from town center , and NH 3A, a US 3 branch route from Franklin to Plymouth . The railway line to Franklin was abandoned before the Second World War, after flood damage and the planning of a reservoir in the Pemigewasset below Bristol. At the junction of the I 93 near New Hampton there is a stop for long-distance buses. The airfield in Bristol, Newfound Valley Airport , is only suitable for smaller aircraft with an asphalt runway 579 meters long.
