About three kilometers above, the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge has been taking traffic to Wisconsin since 1982 , which until then was also led over the Julien Dubuque Bridge.

history

J. Dubuque

The bridge is named after Julien Dubuque (1762-1810), a French-Canadian who was one of the first white settlers in the region.

A first bridge was soon no longer enough to cope with the growing traffic. For a long time, the funds for a more efficient bridge were not available, especially since there was initially no urgency.

During the Second World War , however, the importance of an efficient new bridge over the river, which was important for the war effort, grew. Construction of the bridge began in 1942 and was completed a year later. Since there were even fears of German air raids at the time, the bridge was initially painted gray as a camouflage.

Since the bridge was financed through bonds, a toll was initially levied until it was repaid in 1954.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the bridge was renovated and the road surface completely renewed.

Before the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge was completed in 1982, US Highways 61 and 151 also crossed the bridge. Much of the traffic from eastern Iowa to Wisconsin was via Jo Daviess County in Illinois. Today these traffic flows go straight to Wisconsin.
