The Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge is a steel arch bridge that crosses the upper Mississippi River and connects the city of Dubuque , Iowa, with rural Grant County , Wisconsin . The Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge is a four-lane road bridge over which US Highways 61 and 151 run together. From a technical point of view, it is a tied arch bridge in which the outward pressure forces of the two arches are absorbed by the steel beams next to the roadway. It is one of two road bridges in the Dubuque area. There is still a railway bridge between the two. The Julien Dubuque Bridge - the other road bridge - is about 3 miles downstream and runs from Dubuque to East Dubuque , Illinois .
history
In the late 1970s and early 1980s , Dubuque City officials became convinced that the old Eagle Point Bridge was no longer serving the needs. It was decided to build a four-lane river crossing.
The construction work that had begun in the meantime was suspended when an old Indian cemetery was found on the planned bridge approach in Wisconsin . A Winnebago medicine man blessed the site and the remains of the deceased were moved to another location.
In 1983 traffic was diverted from Eagle Point Bridge to the new bridge. A little later, the Eagle Point Bridge was demolished. In the early 1990s , the access to the bridge in Dubuque was expanded to four lanes. During the renovation work on the Julian Dubuque Bridge , US Highway 20 was diverted over the Dubuque Wisconsin Bridge , which was given a new road surface in 2003.
