The Maquoketa River is a 241 km long right tributary of the Mississippi River in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Iowa . Its catchment area encompasses a 4387 km² mostly agricultural region east and south of Dubuque . The course of the Maquoketa River marks the southern limit of the region known as the Driftless Area , which remained free from glaciation during the last Ice Age .

The main course of the Maquoketa River rises southwest of Arlington in Fayette County . It first flows in a north-easterly direction and then turns to its overall south-east course. It flows through the Clayton, the Delaware , the Jones and the Jackson Counties and passes through the cities of Arlington, Strawberry Point , Manchester , Hopkinton , Monticello , Miles , Preston and Maquoketa .
In Maquoketa, the North Fork Maquoketa River flows into the main course of the river, which until then was sometimes called the South Fork Maquoketa River . The North Fork Maquoketa River rises in northern Dubuque County and is 154 km long to its confluence. The towns of Dyersville and Cascade lie along its course .
The course of the unified river now meanders in an easterly direction to the mouth of the Mississippi, which is located in part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge above Lock and Dam No. 13 is located.
