Dyersville is a small town in Dubuque and to a lesser extent in Delaware County in the eastern part of the US -amerikanischen state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , Dyersville had 4,058 residents.

Dyersville is located on the northern Maquoketa River ( North Fork Maquoketa River ), a tributary of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois .

The city is located at 42 ° 28'53 "north latitude and 91 ° 07'15" west longitude and extends over 11.9 km². Neighboring towns are New Vienna (8.6 km north), Farley (12 km southeast), Worthington (11.2 km south), Earlville (13.6 km west) and Petersburg (14.9 km north-west).

The closest major cities are Dubuque (44.7 km east at the intersection of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin ), the Quad Cities (151 km south-southeast), Cedar Rapids (91.2 km southwest), and Waterloo (105 km west).

The southern bypass of Dyersville is the freeway US Highway 20 , which is the shortest connection from Dubuque to Waterloo. At downtown level, Iowa intersects Highway 136 .

In an east-west direction, a Canadian National Railway runs from Chicago via Dubuque to the west through Dyersville.

history

In 1846 ten families from Bavaria were the first white settlers to come to the area. Two years later came the native Englishman James Dyer , under whose leadership the further settlement proceeded, so that the Bavarian families and the new settlers founded a town in 1949 and named it Dyersville .

In 1888 the Catholic Church of St. Franz Xaver was built and financed from donations. 1956 she was by Pope Pius XII. raised to the minor basilica .

In 1945 Fred Ertl started building models of agricultural machinery. From the original hobby, a family business developed, today's Ertl Company .
