origin of the name

Legend has it that the name is derived from the Cherokee word Ta'ligwu , which means just two or two are enough . In this case, the related two to a meeting of tribal elders that shortly after the Trail of Tears ( Trail of Tears took place). Three tribal elders planned to meet to determine the location of the Cherokee capital. Two came and waited for the third. When it dawned, they decided that two was enough.

More likely, however, is the derivation of the city name from an old Cherokee city in the east called Great Tellico , the English spelling of the Cherokee word Talikwa , the exact meaning of which has been lost after James Mooney . There are references to the word Tel-i-quah , which can be viewed as a level .
