history
Colonel James Poage, a veteran of the American Revolution , reached the area around what is now Ripley in 1804. Poage served in the American Revolutionary War and received about 4 km² of land in the newly established state of Ohio for his service. When he settled on the land assigned to him, he freed the slaves who had traveled with him from Virginia . In 1812 they founded what is now Ripley, then still under the name Staunton. In 1816 it was named after him in honor of General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley .
Due to its location on the Ohio River and its proximity to slave-holding Kentucky, Ripley soon became an important station for slaves fleeing north on the Underground Railroad . Major abolitionist proponents then lived in the city, including Alexander Campbell and John Rankin . In 1822 Rankin moved from Kentucky to Ripley, he built a house on a hill on the Ohio River, from where he showed the fleeing slaves the way to freedom with the help of a lantern and a flagpole. The house is now a National Historic Landmark .
