The Herz-Jesu-Basilica ( French Basilique Sacré-Cœur or St-Martin-du-Sacré-Cœur ) is a Roman Catholic church in Lutterbach , France . The church in the Archdiocese of Strasbourg is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The first church in Lutterbach was consecrated to Martin von Tours . It has been rebuilt several times, the last time in 1761 in the Baroque style.

Renovation was necessary at the beginning of the 20th century. The pastor, the canon Jean-Baptiste Ackermann, wanted to make a new building a place of worship for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The plans for the new church were drawn in the neo-Romanesque style by the architect Heinrich Hannig , who designed a building with three towers based on the Holy Trinity . The foundation stone was laid in 1905. The building was ceremoniously consecrated in 1908. On December 13, 1922, Pope Pius XI awarded the church has the rank of a minor basilica .

The building was badly damaged by bombing at the end of World War II. After the reconstruction, the church was reopened in 1953.

As part of the parish of St. Benedikt bei Œlenberg, the church is looked after by Pallottines together with that of the Oelenberg Abbey .

Furnishing

The rich neo-Romanesque decoration of the construction period no longer exists. New frescoes were created by the painter René Kuder. Part of the old liturgical equipment of the Klem workshops in Colmar has been preserved. The windows from 1952 come from the workshops of Jacques Le Chevallier.

In 1956, five new bells were installed in the main tower. Two years later, a new organ from the Schwenkedel company was installed in Strasbourg.

The church also shows paintings by the artist Jean-Jacques Scherrer from Lutterbach.
