Imboden is in northern Arkansas on the Spring River in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains , 36 mi (58 km) northwest of Jonesboro . US Highway 412 runs through the town , here between Portia and Hardy on a joint route with US Highway 63 , into which US Highway 62 joins from the north and Arkansas Highway 115 from the southwest. history
Members of the Imboden family had immigrated to North America from Switzerland as early as the 18th century and settled in Bucks County , Pennsylvania . Benjamin Imboden moved to Cedar Creek , Missouri in 1820 and to Arkansas in 1828, where he purchased 320 acres (129.5 hectares ) of land in 1830 for the price of $ 1,600 at the location of today's city .
The city experienced strong growth after the construction of the railroad. The first hotel was built in 1883 or 1884, and in 1905 the first houses got electricity. The bakery, established in 1904, developed into a grocery store, but closed in 1920 after a fire. Her building then served as a cinema. In 1889 the place received its own administration.
In 1912, the 21-year-old and partially paralyzed Joe Sullivan was elected as the youngest mayor of a city in the United States at the time. However, he left the place in 1914 and became head of a school for disabled children.
A ferry across the Spring River was set up after the American Civil War and replaced by a bridge in 1898. In 1938 today's concrete bridge for road and rail was completed.
