history
Today's Hendrix College was founded in 1876 as the Central Institute by Isham L. Burrow, a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The primary school (primary school) took her teaching 20 students in Altus, Arkansas on. In 1881 the school was renamed the Central Collegiate Institute and expanded to include a secondary school and college . Four years later, the curriculum was expanded to include the first four-year college course. The name was changed to Hendrix College in 1889, at the same time the elementary school department was closed and the college moved to Conway. Since it was founded as an all-male college, women were admitted in 1909, with strict separation of the sexes being ensured.
The closure of the secondary school took place in 1925 and in 1929 the college was merged with Henderson-Brown College from Arkadelphia to form Hendrix-Henderson College. Since the new name Trinity College was not adopted by the students, it was renamed Hendrix College in 1931 . In 1933 the college was merged with the Galloway Woman's College . After the Second World War, the university expanded into the 1970s before the number of students stabilized at around 1,000.
