Joe Bishop
Joseph Joe Bishop (* 27. November 1907 in Monticello (Arkansas) ; † 12. May 1976 in Houston ) was an American jazz - arranger , composer and flugelhorn player .
Live and act
Joe Bishop learned the piano, trumpet and tuba in his childhood and youth; later he also played the flugelhorn and mellophone . He studied at Hendrix College and had his first professional job as a musician in 1927 with the Louisiana Ramblers , who also performed in Mexico . He then worked with Mart Britt , Al Katz and Austin Wylie before joining the Isham Jones Orchestra from 1930 to 1935 . In 1933 he wrote Blue Prelude for Isham Jones with Gordon Jenkins . In the mid-1930s he was one of the founding members of the Woody Herman Band, but tuberculosis forced him to leave the group temporarily in 1940. Herman then hired him as an arranger in the mid-1940s; his compositions and arrangements appeared on numerous albums by the band. Among them were u. a. the arrangement for Woodchopper's Ball (1939) and his compositions Blue Prelude and Blue Flame , which became the signature tune of the Herman band in 1941. From 1942 Bishop continued to work as a freelance musician in the studios, but withdrew from the music business in the 1950s for health reasons. He opened a store in Saranac Lake, New York and later retired to Texas .
