Washington is located in southeast Iowa on the western headwaters of Crooked Creek , which is part of the Mississippi River basin over the Skunk River . This forms the border between Iowa and Illinois , around 55 km east . The Missouri border runs 100 km south.

Washington was founded in 1839. On the occasion of its centenary, a fountain was inaugurated, which was overhauled in 1995.

In Washington, the first county hospital (dt. About: county hospital) west of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1912 as Washington County Hospital and has been called Washington County Hospitals & Clinics (WCHC) since 1998 .
