The idea came about when the city council was looking for a motto for the annual city festival. Gene Roddenberry , the creator of Star Trek, had previously designated the city as the birthplace of Kirk in his book "The Making of Star Trek". The proposal to combine the city festival with Star Trek was finally accepted unanimously. A memorial stone in the city center and a replica of a Star Trek spaceship illustrate this claim. Based on the theme, “Where the Trek Begins” was chosen as the city's motto. Several Star Trek novels and the Star Trek movie make reference to Riverside.
