Austin Wylie
Austin Wylie ( 1893 - December 7, 1947 ) was an American jazz bandleader.
Austin Wylie began his career at the Golden Pheasant in Cleveland ; he led a dance band in the 1920s and early 1930s, which appeared as a Territory Band mainly in the Cleveland area; their appearances were also broadcast nationwide on the radio. Occasionally the band operated under the title The Golden Pheasant Orchestra . Recordings were made for the label Vocalion and Beltoba; The band's singers were Helen O'Connell and Vaughn Monroe , who later became a big band leader himself. A number of later famous jazz musicians played in Wylie's band, such as Jack Jenney , Tony Pastor , Nate Kazebier , Spud Murphy , Bill Stegmeyer , Joe Bishop , Billy Butterfield , Johnnie Davis, Vaughn Monroe, Claude Thornhill and Artie Shaw ; he also acted as arranger and director of the group. When Artie Shaw started his own band in the 1930s, Wylie became his manager.
