The Rostov Kremlin is an architectural ensemble from the 17th century in the center of Rostov and the former metropolitan residence of the Rostov Eparchy . When it was built, Rostov no longer had a defensive meaning, so the Rostov Kremlin is not a citadel , but was built as a defensive structure. It is a monument to Russian war architecture. Since 1998 he has been a candidate for inclusion in UNESCO World Heritage .

history

The Rostov Kremlin was built between 1670 and 1683. Until 1787 the bishopric was located there (Russian архиерейская кафедра ). In 1787 the bishopric was moved from Rostov to Yaroslavl . After that, the Rostov Kremlin lost its function, was left without maintenance, was used as a storage room and fell into disrepair. It was restored between 1860 and 1880 thanks to donations from dealers. In 1883 a museum of ecclesiastical history was established here until 1918. After that, the Rostov History Museum was located in the building until 1934, the Museum of Local History until 1969 and the Nature Reserve Museum (Russian музей-заповедник ) until 1995 . In 2010 the Rostov Kremlin was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Rostov Kremlin is on the banks of Lake Nero . The fortress wall with eleven towers is 1.3 km long, up to 12 m high and 2 m thick. The following buildings are located inside the fortress with an area of ​​around 6 hectares:
