Lake Nero ( Russian О́зеро Не́ро ) is an almost 52 km² freshwater lake in the European part of Russia in the Yaroslavl Oblast .
The lake was created around 500,000 years ago from the meltwater of a glacier . The name of the water is of Finno-Ugric origin and originated in the time of the first settlements on its banks about 6000 years ago. Lake Nero has two small islands ( Roshdestvensky and Lvovsky ) and, with its average depth of 1.3 meters, is one of the shallowest waters in European Russia. The reason for this is that the lake bed is covered with a thick layer of sapropel . The shallow depth of the lake makes it a popular destination for anglers: there are stocks of pike , bream , perch and pikeperch to be found there.
The old Russian city of Rostov is located on the north-western shore of the lake (often referred to as Rostov on Lake Nero to avoid confusion with Rostov-on-Don ).
